Two questions:

1) I thought that this game had more or less given up on trying to provide a balanced PvP scene. Haven't there been massive game-breaking changes in the last decade that would have to be reversed before it made sense to spend time tweaking the classes?

2) Why would necromancers need a buff when I assume they still have access to scribe, wands, scrolls, staves, sleep, fear, curse, blindness, FoD, locate object, rift, weaken, and freaking dispel magic? This class is just stacked.

I think I've fallen into the mindset that one class/ability/cabal is overpowered etc, but upon playing it, I then realize that my perspective was slightly off. That's why I always ask that people play the class before making assumptions. When was the last time you played the class? Not being sarcastic btw.

I've never played a necro. I think I've only played sorc, rogue, barb, priest, and shaman, actually. But a casual glance at the necromancer spellset puts them near the top of the PvP pack even if you ignore animate dead and control undead. Here is a log of Aldric fighting a 3v5 in which he has put four of his opponents to sleep and has begun picking them off one by one:

Quote:
An aura of darkness fills the room.
( 2) A scrumptious looking steak is here.
A small cutting blade lies here on the ground, discarded.
A life like statuette of a deep-elf soldier has been left here.
A small fountain is here.
An elegant gold-trimmed community forum is here, posting local news.
Vyndigo (an esoteric male human) is lying here prone.
Brock (a towering male giant) is sleeping here.
Zellidon (a cunning male deep-elf) is sleeping here.
An Uxmaln pack mule is sleeping here.
Fintan (a green-eyed male human) is sleeping here.
A large, black horse is sleeping here.
Orius (a lanky male human) is sleeping here.
A golden-furred male lion is here, confidence in his step.
Mirardo (a bald male gnome) is here.

Pertinax (a square-jawed male human) is here, fighting Vyndigo.
(Charmed) Losquaty is here, fighting Vyndigo.
(Charmed) A black bay destrier stands here, restlessly pawing at the ground.

The NPCs are asleep because a sleep stave was brandished (accounting for one of the sleeping PCs as well). When was the last time anyone ever saw a necromancer cast sleep in a fight? It's easily one of the best spells in the game but they're too busy doing o all bash to even bother.

Basically, the necromancer has a vast spellset that includes a wide range of abilities that other classes use to great effect, but we never see necros using these spells. Instead we see them flail around with undead that have been nerfed and then complain about not being able to face roll their way to victory.

We better be careful or we'll summon Edoras, though.

It could be that Edoras was taking the wrong approach, but I don't know. I know he has tested various things extensively since he has played necro many times. I think the sleep spell is good though, although I typically reserved using those spells against opponents that I knew had low willpower. I think that is why people tend to lean toward focusing more on outgoing melee damage with controls/animates.
I'd be happy to help you level up a necro and provide coin etc if you want to RP it out. Send me a PM.

As someone who has been up against Edoras's Necromancers, and as one who has played a couple somewhat competent Necros himself, personally I am on the side that Necros are already kinda OP as is, even with the nerfs. I'd play one now but the market is pretty saturated.

Combine their skill/spell set with an accepting cabal and/or tribunal, and you are laughing!

EDIT:
I would love to see an Edoras level Necro come back and run the Crucible. Just wanted to tack that on.
