I had a thought for an incentive to create a more in-depth character...but I don't know if it is possible code wise.

What if during character creation, you could use 1-3 attribute points towards gaining an amateur level spell/skill that made sense for your character? Obviously skills/spells unique to a class would be out of the question. But this would allow for a little diversification within classes/characters.

(there, you swashies get your dual-wielding whips, now!)

You do have to wait longer. You can't just stun them over and over and gain easy mega-XP. (Note: That was a big loop hole once upon a time.) On the other hand, killing has always been understood to be the easy path.

Sorry I was including stunning in with the killing. Yes, there is a difference but not much of one. It still seems strange that everyone, even those who, once they hit grandmaster, will never be the prime drivers of fights, but supporters, should find the best way to become GM is by fighting.
That doesn't mean that I completely disagree with your stance on say healing not being a prime mover for xp, since it has the potential to be used in a way that shouldn't grant much xp. But I think it xp derived from healing could be changed to reflect the actual amount of healing done. Rather than now where (I think) you get to earn so much xp per game day for casting heal, maybe the xp should have no cap, but rather be a reflection of the healing done. So casting heal on a perfectly healthy person may help you with the heal spell but gives no xp. But if you are standing behind someone taking a beating and keep them from dieing via constant healing, I don't see why this shouldn't be an effective leveling technique.

This would mean some things probably should never provide xp like shrink and enlarge since you could do that on whatever you felt like. But using your skills and spells to interact with the world should give xp. So heck even using the tracking skill to track someone other than yourself or those in your group should give xp. Maybe I'm underestimating the work needing done on this, but I would think this easier to do than many things, and it does make an incentive to act your class, other than just smash faces.

XP for healing is indeed based upon amount of healing done. But there is also a cap on all non-combat XP per game day. Why? To guard against abuse. But the cap is high enough that if you are using healing in ordinary use, you will probably not notice that the cap exists.

Instead of a straight cap, how about a cap based on status? Jman or less, none. Vet - Mentor Soft cap of 10lvls. Master+ hard cap of 2-3 lvls. Once, many priests get out of jman to vet, is when they can truly start helping with their own damage dealing. Yes, I know about undead and healing spells, but it would help with the whole steel dagger thing by making it enticing to group up if the healer can help people stay alive through training.

This is becoming less about RP and more about power leveling.

I fail to see the difference...

If you don't power level, then how can you PK total strangers with RPless fights, then get Kewl L3wtz, while farming bounty NPCs; and then send in all the logs to that other site we don't talk about?
Obviously, someone hasn't been paying attention.

Don

Edited for spelling. Now I feel silly.

Should have felt silly after shunning me and rejecting the awesomeness of Minotaur Priests.

But seriously, no one takes low level characters seriously. If you dont have the power to back up your RP, you can expect nothing less of a curb stomp... Putting it mildly...

And like that, in a single sentence, Chem manages to portray the exact problem of the game. Regardless how many ways you have to "advance" or "level up", as long as people only take you seriously when you consider "perfect match" or above, it will make no difference.

This attitude that is so prevalent in the game is poor RP. To use a real world example, if the President of the United States fought to the death against a Navy Seal, he'd be dead 10 out of 10 times. But people respect his "power" because he has the full force of the US military (including dozens of Navy Seals behind him). And he didn't get any of that power by killing people, only by persuading people to vote for him (aka RP).
