It's become pretty clear to me over the time I've been playing here that as a matter of game design Dulrik cares about balance and mechanics but that as the dungeon master of SK he cares most about encouraging long-lived, meaningful characters and RP. I don't know why some people expect him to reverse course and cater to people who want changes that assist them more with the out of character choices you make as a player building a char rather than the in-character immersion.

I love the idea of removing deletion as an option above level 5. I think it's a considerate nod to people's needs as players to add retirement as defined in the OP. In the rare cases that a delete/delete is warranted (Ganeda comes to mind, spidermonkey's construct char that got owned by an exorcism ritual) I'd hope that the imm staff would oblige thoughtful requests.

Man, was that a fun day for me and Thyki.

One question of clarification, removal of all flags, would this include the religion flag. Religion leader is fine, however if it fully removes you from all associations that could be difficult for those classes that need religion for their spells to work. (Assuming of course they come back from retirement).

All an all I like the idea. While I am not a rage deleter there are times that I dead end with a characters rp and I don't want to delete them they just need shelving. Having retirement as an option would give me more time to consider whether I like my alt better or want to redevote time to my existing main.

Thanks D.

Oh and I completely agree with the containers on a timer.

I would also like to hear characters that have "retired" rather than deleted, which my characters ALWAYS translate to "died." This will really help the SK death rate rise dramatically!

Yeah it'd be funny to think about some 100 year old helves and 60 year old centaurs hanging around playing canasta talking about "back in my day" and complaining those damned whippersnappers always making a racket with their wars.

That is a good example of an rped death, such things should be weighed.

Not all deletion is rage-driven. Sometimes, after playing a character for so long, people just decide that they're not fun anymore. There could be a million different reasons why that would be. Maybe a person just isn't interested in roleplaying a particular personality anymore. Or, (and I know this can be the case for a lot of the army players) maybe someone knows that they won't be able to log in for a long time, and would like to post an Afterlife thread for their character without having to wait several months for it to be auto-deleted, at which point they might not even have internet access.

Personally, this isn't an issue that I ever foresee myself having to deal with, but I'm sure it could upset some other people who would have to.

Also, I'd like to suggest something while I'm at it. When a character is auto-deleted, would it be possible to rig it so that an email is automatically sent to the player when that happens, which would tie in with registering characters?

As long as you can post an afterlife thread when you "retire" your character (which I assume Dulrik would allow), is there any difference between deletion and retirement as he has described it? I am still trying to understand why a few people care so much about their character "actually" being deleted as opposed to retired. Because all of the things you mentioned above can be solved by retiring just as easily as deleting.

P40, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you finish and all, but Apelila was one of the best rage deletes of all time.

Yeah, I almost immediately regretted that rage delete. I had one other delete that could've been considered a rage delete but was actually a "my char is now totally useless" delete. So that means, in my mind, I only had Apelila as my one rage delete. I wished I could've gotten her back, but it never even entered my mind to lobby for protection against myself in such a future circumstance. And I'm one of the whole two people who voted no in the poll, so I know I'm in the minority in my position. And that's why I offered up my own compromise alternative (which I still don't truly like but is more worthwhile in my book than the original idea).

And as far as making lower level chars important, you're talking to someone who accidentally got an enlight on one of his throw-away amateurs. Check with the immstaff on that one, as I announced myself to that member of the immstaff and thanked him/her for not ninja-enlighting me, and told that imm the char might not last (since I create a boatload of chars before one "takes"). My RP starts as soon as I'm done finagling the question-and-answer session to my desire, and doesn't end until I delete;delete.

Dulrik hasn't addressed that yet, actually. And why would he allow it? What if a person -does- decide to pick their character back up again, several weeks down the line after posting an afterlife thread? It would be super lame, but you can bet it would happen. Then, if they get penalized for it, they'll throw a fit and harass the imms, along with anyone else that made them mad.

I got my crystal ball in front of me, see.

If D has a brilliant solution to prevent that kind of thing from happening, then I'm all for it. I'm just explaining the one reason why people might be keen to permanently delete their characters.

Generally, as a manager you shouldn't assume that people will make poor decisions or have bad attitudes. I don't think "people will throw fits on the internet" is a valid argument against any idea.
