You can wear things that are of "above average" quality. And to be perfectly honest there are many items you can buy in the shops or are in larger quantities and with the right amount of enchanting done (yes, I know this can be extremely time consuming I have spent well over a week enchanting a full suit for someone who lost it the next day) on them can be highly effective in PvP.

Also it really depends on what items you have and who might want them at the moment. Is it good to be a little paranoid if for example you have Karnak's adamantite armor and you are not big into the PK scene, yeah probably. But if you've got a necklace or ring that has an invisibility script or something fun, useful and mostly unique then you are probably not going to get PKed for it. So I wouldn't worry too much.
