I think it's a grand idea, and as Lothoriel points out, a very simple solution.

It's not like sorcerers wouldn't still have a bajillion ways to kill people brutally. They'd still have access to NPC charmies to act as tanks and to kill people with.

If CP changes so that you can't charm PCs should the spell then be changed back so it can be scribed? Not really sure why the spell was changed to not being scribed in the first place (too many PCs charmed via scrolls?).

If it were made NPC only, I would think you could just revert all the other changes (casting time, scribing, taking charmees over fly zones, etc.). Well except the RP requirement. That should be left in effect.

You can't just go killing charmees with no RPZ. I don't care if they're NPC or not.

Poor Lathron. His wife left him, his kids don't even know him and worst of all he can't wear his friggin crown.

Every time baldric posts this, I'm going to restate the simplest and most effective solution (even when it's already been mentioned): make PCs uncharmable and revert the other effects (wands, scrolls, no-fly, etc.).

It's a simple, elegant solution that should make every reasonable person happy.

Wouldn't allowing charm person to be scribed again so you can cast it on NPCs be a step in the wrong direction in steering the game away from "NPC wars" if you allow all the recite capable classes to have a charm?

Maybe, but even powerful charm scrolls will only last a few minutes. The use of charm person that you describe was never very highly used when it was possible.

So the current suggestion seems to be more about making a successful PC charm as rare as a critical cleave or headbutt knockout? Sounds acceptable to me.
