I also think Finney's idea would be going too far. Its attractiveness is in its simplicity, but there are (intentional?) gaps in classes that are currently covered by wands/staves/scrolls/etc.

I actually think with the change to concentration and ordering NPC stances the only things that might need tweaking are:
* Charm person on pcs (I'd just disallow this and then take away all the silly stuff about not being able to take charms over air, making them remove everything, increased casting time, scribability, etc.)
* Aggressive wands/scrolls- there might be a few of these that are over the top and should be removed. I use some of them.

There are numerous wands, staves and scrolls that are over the top. At the very least, magical items should not be able to duplicate or mimic spells that are unique to a class.

Got it. I guess I just disagree.

An easy fix would be to only allow wands, scrolls and staves to produce magical effects for known spells. For example, a sorcerer could use an acid blast wand, but reciting finger of death from a scroll or brandishing a stone skin stave would fail since they don't have knowledge of those spells.

This would make scrolls useless to rogues since they dont get any spells. And it'd make scrolls useless to priests since they cant scribe their spells.

I like Jhorleb's idea of making PC's uncharmable by other pc's and allowing you to take your charms over flight-zones again. And removing alot of the ridiculously overpowered wands and scrolls. That would balance out the class by alot

I agree that I would like to remove a lot of scrolls, potions, wands, and staves in the game. It's not fun to go etherealform if everyone else can too.

That is why I revised my suggestion to limiting magical devices to non-unique spells and effects. Yes, it would still be a nerf, but rogues would be able to access spells like fly, identify, invisibility, etc. as they are not unique to a class.

Posting that I agree with Syn that sorcerers are overpowering.

I mean they can even cast a spell that kills and junks at the same time. So imbalancing.

It's pretty stupid that they can resize items for free and talk any language they want without having trained it as well.

It's also pretty stupid that they have detect magic and ventriloquate. They can make people say things. Who thought this was a good idea?

One time I won the game by casting tongues and ventriloquating the enemy leader to say 'Flee.' in the middle of battle.

True story.

I would be sad if the Swiss Army Knife of Classes got pieces taken away. I've never played one, but I always feel that RP opportunities are lost when a decides to take away the most imaginative functions of a class.

Also, Syn. You know what all the "I win" buttons of sorceror have in common?

They require the sorceror to be in the same room as its enemy.

I take more risk casting voodoo than I would take as Ealuriel engaging a group of six PCs.

True story.
