Honestly coming back and trying to play, there is some pretty neat stuff and a lot of glaring weaknesses. If you want to attract and keep people you need to make things more fun, less of a chore.

Money: At low levels people need cash to train skills/spells/songs, you either have to grind an area for coin, or find someone to mentor you, easier to grind than to try and find a player to help. The low numbers make it hard to find mentors. People who don't know how to gather coin, where, etc. Just makes things a large deterent, newbie gear costing a fortune, I had to grind for almost two hours to buy basic gear in some cities.

Auto Res: that neat reward we get when we have so many people on for so long, make that for when the playerbase is say at 20 and under, or when there are a lack of positive aligned priests.

Level grind: Allow us to hire npcs for our group for short periods of time that allow us to replace the people we can't find in game to help us out. Make them level restrictive and limit their abilities but make them useful, make them count as a pet.

equipment: Make the low level stuff affordable and worth something. Honestly needing 50 of an item to make an obsidian is kind of nuts. I knew what I was doing and it still took me the better part of 15 hours to generate 40 obsidian, and I was using every trick in the book at my disposal.

Make things fun: I always thought that having the ability to allow paragons to take a temporary roll as an angel with limited building and limited area access would make for some cool RP, that way they can generate a module withing certain guidlines and have an RP session, from a couple hours or a couple weeks, people petition to be part of the story and are accepted under the stangel criteria.

Take the Grind out of the game: Listen to the people who play and what they want. You need to remove the grind out of this game and let people get to the fun part. While I understand there is supposed to be RP at every level, you don't get your good stuff till master, make getting to master super quick, then bog down the last 10 levels and make everyone get the needed perks at master.

Listen to the player base: 'nuf said

I can honestly say the game is interesting, it is challenging to a good degree, the potential for roleplay is there, but the lack of people, the need to make the players sufffer, and just the overall time sink to get anywhere is too much. I understand you need to work to get cool stuff, but even finding RP is hard a lot of the time, you have to go generate it yourself.

Either way this is gettting beaten to death, but oh well, I had to say my piece on this, it's just WOW, not worth the time. Make it fun and give the power to the players like it's claimed, you will see a spike if people find they can do more stuff that has an impact and that they can control, but make them earn it.

Oh, Yiggmas, what the hell? Ten years and this is the first time I haven't seen trees. Makes me sad :(

Regarding the part that you mentioned about hiring NPCs, that was taken out a while back as there isn't supposed to be player run slavery in SK or so. Basically they removed all sentient pets because of a few spellcasters that some imms made that were crazy overpowered in the utility department and made the need for certain classes at an all time low. Due to that they made it so no pets can be sentient.

If anyone is having problems with the grind, please PM me and I can help out. I personally see absolutely no grind at the lower levels and have no problem getting just about any race/class to Master in relatively no time. I know more lightie than darkie when it comes to the lack of grind, but I have knowledge. Please take advantage of it.

e.g.
Code:
 oOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOo
 o [Scores] Friggle, Breakstone                                              o
 o===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===o
 o    Status: Master(1)         Race: Dwarf            Class: Barbarian      o
 o   Kingdom: Taslamar         Cabal: Independent                            o
 o===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===o
 o     Coins: 5 platinum, 6 gold, 2 silver, 7 copper                         o
 o  Carrying: 0/18 items                    Load: 91.8/411.5 pounds          o
 o===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===o
 o    Health: Fine            Mental: Pulsating     Physical: Fatigued       o
 o Attribute points: 0        Wimpy:   0 percent    Mode: Kill/aggressive    o
 o===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===-===o
 o You are sleeping.                                                         o
 o You have just begun your journey to the next level.                       o
 o You have played 32 hour(s) so far.                                        o
 oOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOoOOOo

Leveling is the easiest it has even been in SK's history right now. I understand how it can still seems like a grind but perhaps there are areas and ways of leveling you haven't discovered yet.

Insisting that there isn't a grind really isn't helpful to those who perceive it. Just saying.

I didn't insist it's not a grind, it is. It's just the easiest grind it's ever been. This is a grinding game, always has been, always will be.

I've never played a game based on levels where you don't have to grind out the levels.

Well that -dwarf barb- is from taslamar, and i'm guessing since he is that he is a lightie? If so, that dont really prove much seeing as lighties are likely the easiest thing to level (especially at the levels of veteran+ which people seem to struggle with) and so are barbs. And dwarves are also the easiest race to level at lower levels since they get axe mastered. Just sayin'.

Also, take the code off of that and make it a quote. Its so annoying to try and read when something is coded like that.

Other games have more players and more interesting grinds.

I don't find it so easy from Expert-Master.
