I don't have any problem tanking with a one-hander and a shield, and my one-handed spec isn't even very accurate.

If you don't think heavy-armor classes can tank, look at the 2/13/2010 log on [REDACTED] of Iohana tanking, like, 10 rounds of a giant merc and a giant scout both hitting her.

Mood defensive, which everyone has only recently caught onto, allows for completely ridiculous tanking. It's really a joke and the AC bonus needs to be looked at.

Go look up the most recent log of Iohana on google (wow, you really felt the need to wordfilter that?) or look up -any- log with Nico in it.

What's unheroic and thematically inappropriate is the fact that anyone resting in an inn or sitting somewhere can be blindsided and bashed by a merc or barb, and there's -nothing they can do about it.- Pets are the buffer that allows you to get away from surprise attacks. Remove that, and the game would suffer insurmountably.

The fact that staying behind a pet is the only intelligent thing to do in SK is because of the strength of bash. This is an awful idea because you're trying to fix the only recourse to a skill without changing the skill. As well, there's not a chance that a change this sweeping would ever happen.

As people seem to think this makes warriors over powered, the way I read it is this:
Code:
Current:
Bob hits you for 100 damage.
You take 100 damage.
Your pet takes 0 damage.

Changed:
Bob hits you for 100 damage.
You take 100 damage
Your pet takes 25 damage too.

There would be no advantage or damage reduction to riding a pet for a warrior.

Thank you to all the people who have provided constructive criticism. Since my proposal was based primarily on the idea that heavy armor tanking needed to be improved, and this does not appear to be the case, then I happily retract my proposal.

While I continue to think that hiding behind your pet is inappropriate for a wide range of character concepts, this alone is not basis enough to rally for change. I wish you all the best of luck, and happy gaming! :P

All pets short of mounts should be removed. Mounts should not be able to show up in a formation preventing people from hiding behind them. Cloth classes will require a skill/spell update to compensate for this change in the forms of,

Barrier spell that absorbs so much damage.
Conjurer spell to summon a minion to take damage but offer nothing else.
Improved fortification spells that are caster only.

It's very easy to move the game away from needing pets to hide behind. So heavy armor and light armor classes aren't felt lift out you can add new modifications to armor enchantments pending on armor type. Increased Parry/Dodge for light armors, reinforced protection from heavy, increased blocking potential from shields and so forth.

You really didn't think that out, did you? Personally, I'd be fine with it. ^_^ I happen to have access to a certain mount with, well, more HP than I have.

If you are talking about the white meat shield, its illegal to use it like that apparantly.

It's illegal to stand behind it or in front of it (to protect from melee or rogues, respectively) because it has so much HP. It's not illegal to mount it, dumbass.

But in order for Incendax's suggestion to work, you'd have to be mounted anyway . . .

But yes. Hiding behind (or in front of) said mount is punishable.

I was under the impression you just can't put it in front of you but that positioning it behind you is legit.

Negative, Ghostrider. If you're not mounting it, it should be put somewhere to rest until it disappears.
