If breakouts from jail are easy, then the whole system becomes more of a waste of time than a way to conclude a battle. (Yes, I believe jail is meant to stop private or public wars, at least temporarily.) Problems with excessive sentences are best dealt with by fixing the sentences.
I would love to see the code be more about punishing actual murders, and less about punishing every attack command, especially attacks on NPCs. Just mucking around with the jail duration penalties might work wonders. For example...
High murder: 2.5 IC days
Low murder: 1 IC day
Atttempted murder/Assault: 0.25 IC days
I've seen a nicely RPed attack with a fireball that cost the caster a 9 day sentence. Having a character locked up for 4 1/2 hours seems excessive OOC punishment. Under the suggested penalties above, the same attack would only yield a 4.5 day sentence, and that only because a lowbie PC got fried. That's about 2 hours, which seems a reasonable of time for jail roleplay.
