Those are some great suggestions which I will seriously consider, Salandarin. If everyone put as much thought into solutions instead of just complaining about the problems, I think we would have a lot more success. Complaining doesn't encourage new people to try the game - it drives people away from trying the game. Continuous statements like "nobody is playing" just creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Did Dulrik just turn into Zedd there? Zeddulrik?

"Think of the solution, not the problem."

I really, really like Saladarin's ideas. As he said though, I think it is important to not add punishments. Incentives are soooo much nicer. I've tried to get several of my more nerdy friends and family members to play by recounting fun tales of my characters adventures and interactions. But not one of them has been able to get past the leveling and empty inns. :(

the whole weekend to grind that last 4 levels to grandmaster

Congratulations. "In the olden days" I never got a character to GM, and I was level 40+ for months. Bonanza weekends with their bonus XP rates that are around nowadays are a boon and incentive especially to those who had little to no idea of MUDs and levelling with our first characters.

If it would have taken you a weekend to get those last few levels anyway, then perhaps the Bonanza bonus only helped you slightly, but it definitely did something. :)

Another honest confession, again, don't hate me, even with the +experience turned on, sociable charisma score and green familiarity bar all the way, it still took the whole weekend to grind that last 4 levels to grandmaster. It really didn't make any noticeable difference.

I noticed a HUGE difference in leveling during that weekend. I got the last 3-4 levels in about 8 hours in an area that told me 'to get out and explore more'...granted my CHA was influential.
