In the history of Ancient Greece, as well as our mythology, typically Greek armies and so forth, preferred SPEARS and SHORT SWORDS.
In turn in medieval England, Pikes, Glaives and Polearms were used, along with the weapon of melee choice, Longsword.
In Egypt of the old, one could find Daggers, Sickles and Spears as well as several modified and smaller in size polearms.
In Persia of the old, Bow and Javelin/Spears were widely used.
In Oriental themes, Japan etc, the Katana Tando and Wakizashi were broadly used.
Bottom line is that one cannot consider one weapon better over the other.
Each culture adapted several weapon types that suited their army's fighting style, terrain, customs, training and so forth.
I cannot say that an Egyptian with a Sickle would be better over a medieval British Knight with a lance, or a Myrmidon with a spear and shortsword, and so on. Each had his own specialization and use for his weapon of choice.
Just my two cents
