I guess I'm just dumb, I don't know which rule is being broken with naming pets similar to your adjective or name. I'm not saying it isn't lame, but I've never seen the "Its illegal to name pets in annoying ways" rule. If I had, I would have patrolled for it. I'm more than willing to take the appropriate measures when there are violations, but until I have some kind of Dulrik-approved guideline, I'm not going to just go around slaying people.

Yay, random slays from Achernar!

*pulls out his "I got randomly slain by Achernar" T-shirt!*

But really, most people do this so that the pet is hit first. I know some people who use disguise to look like another group member etc. As far as pet names though?

Eh, part of the game I guess.

Pet names cannot be a substring of your complete adjective. They can have substrings that are similiar to your name, but that is all. This means that unless the pet has the prepurchased keyword that is identical to the owner's adjective, the owner cannot name their pet in such a way that they have identical targetting words. They can be similiar, but not the same.

I don't see what the REAL problem is here, other than the fact that people are too lazy to use #.<string> targeting or type out complete adjectives.

I know that I'll continue to name Dimmel's pet "Dappes" (yup, that was my mephit's name!) just to [REDACTED] you lazy people off.

:D

But what about the initial PK contact when you don't know the person is a cheating bastard? You can't premptively type 2.blah.
It takes away from RP as well to be constantly talking to horse and making yourself look like an idiot, like Morovik pointed out.
If there's not a rule against this I think there should be. No IC reason I would be getting you and your mount confused, unless I'm rping being blind or you're rping looking like a horse.

My priest always named his pet hazey (adj was Hazel-eyed). I knew it was cheesy but I would usually leave my pet behind when not in running around for whatever reason. So people would talk to my ber not me when we were doing something but in my temple or whatever the bear was rarly around.

That aside, while i do not like to think myself as anything PK related I know I do this lame [REDACTED] and so must a shitload other people. Becuase I HAVE giving up "leet" loot because the weeping cloth [REDACTED] was soo damn cool I had to have it (also Dabi armor is for women)

I remember a time that someone learned OOCly my pet's name, and suddenly all out of the sudden gates opened targeted to my wolf....

I dont see a reason for anyone but the owner of the pet to be able to call it by it's name.

Learn situational awareness. You should be analyzing room information including the order of all PCs, NPCs, pets, etc when you enter a room. Granted this doesn't help with a pet that has keywords that aren't in it's long description, but it will help. I don't see how a sturdy male half-elf using a sturdy mule as a pet is 'cheating'. It might be annoying, but if people stop being lazy and start noticing pet long descs as well as PC adjectives, they can eliminate the 'annoyance' of talking to the person's pet.

If it does happen, it should only happen once. After you mistake the pet for the person the first time, you should be correcting yourself. If you can't make an observation and correct yourself after it happens the first time, you just aren't cut out for playing RP or PK MUDs...

...and so goes the opinion of an old man like myself.

(Note: I'm so old, I don't know what this QTF thing is. It makes me think people are saying "quit [REDACTED] talking" or something like that.)

Outside of PK this gets really annoying.

I swear to god I will never reward someone if I catch them using similar names for their pet as is their adjective.

If I have to use more than six characters to identify someone, or a number, then I will hate you and PK you for that reason alone.
