Why not add a OOC message just after the first time that you see it? Some like OOC: You have had an item or items lost due to you not being high enough level to keep them. Or something like that.

I think the most useful and lowbie friendly thing would be for the login theives to tell you what they've nicked.

Nothing worse than diving into battle only to find it's your damned sword or shield or breastplate or something that's gone.
