Warlocks are pretty good too. They get elementals and fireballs!

Sorry kiddo - seems the advice of folks around here is assuming a fair bit.

To get into the game you'll need to go through the creation process. You sound like you managed to create a name okay since you're a soul, but you'll need to enter various 'portals' to indicate how you wish to proceed through creation.

For example:

Code:
Obvious exits: male female
A glowing portal labelled - 'Male'.
A glowing portal labelled - 'Female'.

If these are the exits above, then typing 'male' (without the quotes) would be the method by which you would choose the gender of your new character. This process continues through creation as you are asked various questions, until the last step which is the kingdom in which you start playing. After that, you're on your merry way to fun and adventure.

If you need advice there'll be a ton of it here in the newbie forum (and probably a few discussions over which is better), but rest assured there are very few 'wrong' choices, and always the ability to start a new character, should you run into a dead end.

In my experience, a light aura priest of elven or human heritage is usually the easiest path towards learning the game, for various reasons that won't make much sense just yet. But if you feel like being another race, another profession, or of a different alignment - feel free!

The first 'portal' to enter is less than obvious to complete newbs. That one you enter by typing 'portal' without the quotation marks.

Too true!

Don't be discouraged. We won't go anywhere. Keep asking questions.

I always suggest that new players start with a human mercenary of unprincipled or anarchist alignment. They get a variety of skills as a mercenary which other classes share. Mercenaries also have fairly easy to find trainers among other advantages for new players. By choosing the human race they have time to learn more about other races without being threatened as heavily for their own.

Also, avoid joining a religion, tribunal, or cabal until you are more experienced with the game. It's true that they can be fun, but unless you know a bit of what to expect they can discourage people quite quickly.

Simply follow the instructions of the creation process, choose carefully, read your helpfiles, and have fun. If you have more questions simply ask.
