In a rough-hewn stone cell
  Hastily chiseled from the living rock, this enclosure is about ten hands
from floor to ceiling and about six paces in width and depth, with no
windows, only the door and the feeding sloth cut into it.  Hardly a
comfortable living space, especially for, say, a giant, but there are rumors
about of far worse living conditions.  At least the floor is covered with a
comfortable amount of hay, and it smells likes it is changed not too
infrequently.

You cannot pick up things in the room that are solid, but you can eat them? I understand things in your hands because your gear goes Eth too. I noticed this first with the pump in the Taproom the other day and then documented it for both food and drink.

A bug? Or is this how it is supposed to work by design?

If you want the eat & drink code to check for the ethereal nature of things, whether they're in your inventory (in which case I assume you believe you should be able to eat them, because the spell turns everything you're carrying ethereal, or you're in an ethereal bubble ..or something) and yet not if they are on the ground, outside your little bubble...

Then, I'd like to request that you be able to eat things carried in your hands, too.

PS: Note that beasts quite often eat from the ground, so a simplistic rule of 'the eater must be carrying their food' wouldn't work. Perhaps a feed command/social?
