I believe he's referring to the fact that both are speaking at once. There are two NPCs in the room: Iarbonel and the wary male half-elf. When you ask if you can train a skill, it checks for every NPC in the room. For instance, let's assume the wary one trains SoF and Iarbonel trains fourth attack (i know this is blatantly incorrect, but helps to explain) which isn't a skill you can learn. If you typed train, you would see: From wary male half-elf- I can train you in: Spear of Faith 5 gold. From Iarbonel- I'm sorry, I can only help you train your stats. When you type "train spear of faith" the wary one trains you, but Iarbonel doesn't have that spell on his training list and thus tells you that he can't help you.
