History:
While leveling I spend a lot of the down time reading through various help files and the SK website. It was from one of those perusals that I had read that often the priests of the dark faiths are dominated by their stronger hellion counter parts. However, I had never met or heard of a darkie priest who seemed subservient to anyone save their god, and decided if I were to make another character I would try for that basic concept. Kouin Shi was thus born along with two hellions who were to be her “masters.” Ultimately I failed in my original objective, due in part to a difficulty I had playing a “slave”, and a lack of a suitable “master.” I had the most difficult time picking an alignment for her because as a slave, she was definitely not self serving, nor was she ever going to be particularly evil, at least in my mind, so I went with abberant. Looking back on it, I am glad I picked that as it worked out better for who she became than I could have ever hoped for.
Kouin was born in Uxmal on a small farm along the boarder of the Ice wall mountains. Her mother and father lived almost at hermits on their small farm, growing what they needed to survive and occasionally hunting for caribou farther north. Her parents were content with just one another, but as they grew older, they realized they would need someone to help tend the farm and care for them as they aged. So they decided, late in life, to have a child. As the cold winter bore down upon them and the month of Great Evil turned into the Winter wolf, Kouin was born and her mother died. From that point on her father never treated her as a daughter, only as a servant used to care for him and tend the farm. He would constantly refer to her as a murderer and useless. She suffered both physical and mental abuse during her youth, clingly fiercly to her fear, the only thing that kept her knowing she was alive. Kouin was forced to wear a metal collar and was chained either inside their home or to a post outside while she tended the farm. The collar was never removed as she grew, causing a permanent scar and breathing problems her whole life. On the seventeenth anniversary of her mother's death her father attacked her with an axe, barely missing her, he cut through the chain and she ran.
Eventually she ended up in Teron, with nothing to eat, and dragging a chain behind her. A blacksmith happened upon her and aided in the removal of the collar for a small fee, as she had no money he told her to go to the Arena and fight. She would be rewarded for her victories and come pay him back the next day. While at the Arena though, she was attacked by brothers who were seeking to serve the Lord Algorab as knights. Knowing no one else in the city who might aid her, she followed as she was told. They saw her as being unable to fight and forced her to offer prayers to their Lord to heal them as they fought. Through this time she began to feel a strength in those prayers and when her “masters” we not about she would pray for Algorab to take her under His wing and allow her to serve Him as a vessel.
Years passed and the two knights seemed to disappear leaving her once more alone. She took to traveling the realms in search of someone who might teach her about Algorab and what it means to serve as a priest. Her searching was in vain until one day walking in the forest, she was attacked by a cougar. With nothing but a dagger and her falcon, she fell easily to the big cat. As she stared uncomprehending at her body below, a golden tendriled form began to appear before her. The god of death, whose touch she had never felt was now floating beside her, a voice echoed around her. It spoke of an untimely death, a purpose unfulfilled. It spoke of a need for change, transition into what will become. Just as suddenly as she had died, she was alive again, standing before the Altar of Fear. As she knelt in prayer the shadows about the room shifted, something was there and not there. Suddenly she was pressed against the floor only to be lifted and thrown into the cold stone wall of the altar room. Pain exploded through her abdomen as though she had been run through with a sword. When the pain subsided she looked down at her abdomen only to find a simple orb that seemed to absorb the light all around it. And so she was a servant once more, to her true Lord and master.
There is her history. I suppose I could have included what happened after her induction, but those who knew her, basically know what her life was. She was a simple priestess, disliking emotions and generally the company of others. Often she could be found haunting the Inns all over the realms speaking on the tenants of her Lord to the few who would tolerate it. She was eventually made leader of the faith, but I could never really get into that role with her. She was intensely private about most of her life, sharing her full life story with only one other being. I really enjoyed playing her, and I tried to give off the sense that there was more to her than what she would let on. Her almost obsessively honorable and polite behavior, I think lead some to always be cautious around her, which I suppose is good. I attempted to get a series of sermons going, but after the utter failure of the first one, I just let it go.
P.S. Phreya's is taking a bit longer, I will get it up eventually.
