People who play WoW alot tend to call the chars toons.

I know about 3 people who call it that just off the top of my head.

Many people who play muds do/have played MMO's is what he/she was getting at im sure.

(though, the mud-dev2 mailing list doesn't really care)

character is a common term to refer to a character in almost all MMOs. If you play them for a while you tend to use the same terms as the other players. Hence my character is a character. I don't think I ever refered to any of my characters as a character before I left and I am also fairly sure that you wern't around when I left.
