Perhaps there are factors I do not know of when it comes to determining a characters familiarity in any given area, if this is the case, excuse my ignorance.

However, as far as I can see, the general trend seems to be that at veteran or lower levels, you can get somewhere in the vicinity of 5/6 levels in any given area, and then your familiarity will be at "You need to go out and explore new areas." or very close to it.

Once you reach levels Expert (31) or above, this seems to drop pretty reliably to around 2/3/3.5 levels pr. area, something that is slowly but surely being offset by the implementation of more and more areas in which one can gain experience with relative ease.

On my latest character though, I noticed few, but in each case very noticeable deviations from this pattern. For instance, my character was able to gain 11 levels in the Bakemono caverns (from 16-27) but the same character reached yellow familiarity in Elisair Palace (Part of the Elisair general area.) after having gotten only Two-thirds of a level there.

The same trend seems to hold true for the Tower of the Rose, although I cannot say for sure yet and I am also not quite sure what larger area Tower of the Rose is a part of.

In order to eliminate some of the most obvious answers to why this is happening, I did not train a single skill while training in any of the abovementioned areas, and can thus rule out the possibility that this might be why I am perceiving familiarity as rising faster than I had expected.

Am I missing something big about familiarity, or is something wrong with any of these areas?

:edit: Also, to clarify, the usual "familiarity rates" seem to hold true for areas I have visited both before and after the deviates in these examples. (Blasted Chancel and Ayamao Outpost in the Valley between Exile and Selkwood.)

Each area is flagged at a certain level depending on whatever factors. If you go to that area much lower than the level it's flagged for (as I'm pretty sure you did with the Bakemono caves) familiarity slows down a lot. However if you go to an area that is flagged lower than the NPCs you're grinding off of (which I think might be the case in Elisar since the majority of the NPCs [the citizens] are lower than the ones you were probably fighting) you're familiarity will speed up.

That explains it, and makes me want to cry myself to sleep. Thanks for the info though.

Area range does seem to be one of the variables.

Elesair is really quite stupid, it's best for leveling at like mentor...but you get like 1/2 a level before it goes yellow.

I leveled there at mentor and was only able to get 1 level before it went red.

Let me just add Ch'zzrym to the list of lame areas here. Yellow after 1 level, and at that point the exp just slows down so immensely that it's hardly worth the effort.

Not sure if this has been said yet but, I think the problem is there level range being so huge. Elisair is AMA to Master thats a pretty big gap. Areas with closer gaps like the chancel(which is EXP to MAS) tend to last a lot longer from what I've noticed.

The areas you speak of are flagged for lower and upper lvls, like Teron, or somewhere else, except with Teron, you don't want to waste your lvling there on the goblins anymore, you want to wait for bouncers. But something was always fishy about sprite city, but its because it can be easily turned into a newbie starting city.
