I was thinking about a type of weapon that would add a little variety to the game and thinking about types of weapons not currently featured in the mud (at least to my knowlegde).

What do you think of a type of weapon that is low damage, but is used to snare opponents. For example:

Bolas - the wielder would throw the weapon and if a hit is made, would render the target 'snared' for x amount of ticks, inflicting minimal damage, maybe only ever enabling a stun. It is a one use weapon (if a hit is made) as the target would cut him/herself free, rendering the device broken. It could be used to stop opponents fleeing, 'tripping' opponents from a room away. This could then allow the thrower to change weapon and make an attack on a downed opponent. Useabel by Mercs, Rogues and Scouts. Apparently you get different types with 2. 3 or 4 weights... what the difference is in effect I have no idea.

Other weapon types of this nature could be lasso and net.

This lead me to thinking of other handy weapons:

Boomerang - thrown weapon that obv. returns to the thrower (maybe there is a chance they will drop it dependant on skill). Lower damage and limited attacks per round (which end if the weapon is not retrieved successfully). Maybe Mercs, Rogues, Scouts, Barbs.

Caltrops - Used by rogues and scouts. Dropped in rooms to slow people down. Damages legs of victims and imposes a slight move lag and sets speed to walk. Not used as a method to inflict harm, but buys scouts time to flee, etc. And with the recent appearance of Ninjas and Assassins, this seems quite fitting.

There used to be bolas in the game, perhaps they still are.

I like the boomeranf idea, perhaps only 1 attack per throw, but has reach ;)

There are snares that do much better than caltrops.

I don't know how snares work, but I imagine they take time to deploy, with caltrops you just drop them (no lag) and run.

I also meant to include a smoke bomb, which is a thrown weapon and will cloud the area for x amount of time. Again, great for the assassins as they throw it in the room and carry out their act under the cover of smoke. You can only see 'someone' is there and attack them. If you kill them you can make good your escape without being identified. Being an assassin you would only ever use it when you can see your target alone.

Do the current Bolas' entangle/snare/trip?

I know a bolo existed, probably still does. Also a net once existed it was a unique style weapon. Caltrops, eh whatever, smoke bomb that "clouds" the room is too similar to a certain cabal spell.

No, the cabal spell things last for freaking ever and is a spell. Smoke bombs (or whatever they were called) would last for a very short amount of time and not be effective outdoors. They could be thrown to another room and everyone would have their vision clouded (just seeing someone(s)) until the effect dissipated.

I like caltrops. One of my favorite get-away weapons in DnD.
