Post subject:  dispel/cancel vs charm

Why oh why do both remove charm?

Quote:
Dispel magic is an offensive spell, and as such, the victim receives a
saving throw to avoid it. If the dispel is successful, each beneficial spell
effect
has a chance of being destroyed. Harmful spells are untouched by
dispel
. [dispel and AoE]

Dispel should not remove charm, that is all.

I would also like to point out that as a sorc you should be able to cancel any affects from your charmie that you are not holding (i.e. charm), but that's another dream.

C 'cancel' Charm releases the charm
C 'Dispel magic' Charmer releases the charm

Cancel is easier to land is why it is more benificial to cancel. Charm person is considered a benificial spell, hence dispel will get rid of it.

I'm fairly certain that you can cast dispel magic directly on the charmed person to remove the charm spell.

I don't see any reason why this should be changed.

ah you dont? Do you consider charm a beneficial affect? I sure dont. One spell to ruin a sorc's day is plenty, espcially considering cancel is not an offensive spell.

Charm is benificial to the charmer, not benificial to the charm, if casting dispel on the charm releases the charm it should be fixed. I haven't seen it work that way, but it's been a while since I have paid attention.

i completely agree. Until just a little while ago, I assumed that was the way it worked.

Both spells are absolutely fine the way they are, if you feel that the spell needs to be changed solely because of some dubious wording in the help file - then you should ask yourself whether the change is actually necessary.

I play a sorceror, and I would not consider the class to be underpowered. After all, sorcerors get dispel magic themselves. If you're going to be up against someone with dispel magic, you need to plan accordingly.

It's fine.

Hey, do you guys remember when that fall code just got implemented? Man, I had a sorc back then and I spent about a week just charming random people, making them fly, and then dropping them on top of cities. I did it to about ten people.

God it was funny.
