If I ever get 'caught' (and I use inverted commas because if someone saw me do it I would not consider myself caught doing anything I shouldn't) killing a grey aura for an item, I can think up all kinds of great reasons on the fly.

He stole the item from me. He was arguing with me. He was preventing the victory of the light by keeping the item from me. He was obstructing the path of the righteous (me). He looked at me funny.

There are all kinds of great reasons for killing a NPC, even a grey aura NPC. Back in the day we light auras used to run off to Teron all the time to "purify" anyone we found there - by which of course, we meant PCs. And if I ganked that PC, I didn't leave their items for them most of the time. I certainly don't recall ever having punishment for that even come up as a possibility.

Edit: Wow. I have a talent for getting the first post of a page.

Some people just worry about equipment too much.

That right there justifies a lot.

You've aroused my curiousity. What is this wonderful equipment that's necessary for the victory of the light, with no feasible substitute anywhere? I've seen a lot of peaceful, intelligent, gray NPCs, but I can't think of a single thing on them that fulfills that description.

There's nothing wrong with characters justifying themselves when they do wrong. It's good roleplay. But we should make a more clear-sighted call when we OOCly declare an alignment for them.

Sorry forsooth, I'm speaking hypothetically. I can't readily give you item names and their possessors.

Generally speaking however, this wonderful equipment equates to anything I decide I need at the time :P

I think it's worse than murder. You beat someone to within an inch of their life, and take their [REDACTED], and leave them there helpless. But that's just my point of view.

So you'd rather someone hack you to pieces and take your wallet than for someone to knock you over the head with a stick one time and take your wallet?

You can always regain consciousness and get another wallet...dead people have no use for wallets so honestly...ARE YOU CRAZY?

How can you possibly say that beating someone up is worse than killing them.

The thing I don't like about principles killing greybies for loot is that killing for loot is a selfish act. Principled alignment specifically says that they value life above all else, THIS INCLUDES PHAT LOOT.

la di da di da, i love life, i love life...oooOOoOOOoh, I love that sword more than your life, GIVES IT TO MEHS NOW!!!!

That is clearly not the thoughts of a principled character...not a well played one anyway.

And the inquisition was the grandest time in our history. We really taught those witches a lesson and I can't wait for the day when we can burn witches again. I got my own copy of the Malleus Maleficarum on the book shelf waiting.

Actually cannibal, what if that principled character simply had in mind the lives they could save with said phat lewt? Surely for someone who values life above all else, that person must be willing to off the occasional person who would cause more loss of life by their presence (or by their not giving away their loot).

That is the point of scrupulous. Principled are more lawful stupid than scrupulous.

Even still, I believe it is a suitable course of action for a principled character who is in the belief that his deeds are for the greater good.

Cannibal, what we're differing on, is what exactly 0% means. To me, it means "within an inch of your life". One more smack, hell, you can get slapped into trauma and die. You're taking 0% as merely unconscious, which is a bit different. Sure, being knocked out isn't so big a deal, but the former, is. Now, add to the former, the idea that your money is gone (no chance to drag yourself to a healer and get healed), your clothes and weapons are gone (no chance to defend yourself from anything ELSE that wants to kill you), and that you may or may not be in the middle of nowhere where anyone is inclined to help you. I for one, would rather die, than be put in such a situation where I am left, helpless.
