I would suggest making mercs master of melee and not ranged combat at all, for reasons in their skillset.

Blitzkrieg - A mercs #1 Master skill.. intended for melee but completely ignored.
retreat.. a good leader doesnt stand in the back row, a good leader stands in the front directing the rest.
bash - cant do it from the back.

This would save wimping ranged combat and crossbows and allow mercs to utilize all their skillz.

how many generals do you see on the front lines?

no, a good leader stays in the back row so his idiot troops die and he doesn't.

The only reason anybody's whining about ranged combat is because people have been using it out the freakin' wazoo lately. That's okay, they only just figured out what it can do. But c'mon, every time somebody realizes "hey, I could kick some [REDACTED] with this stuff!" then EVURYBUDDY comes up and starts yelling "WIMP ET! WIMP ET!" Geez, come on, people. Don't just yell for a wimp, find a way to beat this new all-powerful tactic. It's not rocket science.

Yah, Cyra knew. I tested it out with my scout, and I perfected it with my merc.

Why whine about perfection?

No need to be egotistical. You're not perfect, you're just full of yourself.

Frankly, it sounds like a warlock who knew what he was doing could rip Krakish to shreds, just for an example. Gale-force wind, lightning bolt, kaboom. Of course, that wouldn't be quite as effective versus non-giant warriors, but hey.
