I thought there was a pretty general consensus that alertness was a useless ability? Detections are a necessity that are superior in every way.

Alertness is kinda an ability you don't need, but it's nice to know who's around you when it does trigger. I always use it as kinda a reminder to put all my crap in the bag I'm wearing so a rogue can't steal my stuff when he walks in. It also helps pick up invis people to, which is nice as a barb since you don't have detect invis with out herbs and such. Other then that, I don't really care if a rogue backstabs my barb anyways.

perhaps this belongs in another thread. But the "healing" from successfully resisting a spell should be dependent on the level and mana cost of the spell, not the amount of MR.

i.e. resisting Heal/Petrification/FoDeath should heal hp significantly more than successfully resisting Fly/Cure (or cause) light/magic missile.

The spells listed are just examples.

I think both are considered.

There is absolutely no incentive to train MR. It means no giant strength, no haste.

Okay... what about if you're not a melee fighter, and are scarred of getting petrified and the such? You don't need GS or haste

Yeah, that's pretty widely agreed-upon. Someone should make a sticky entitled "Don't train MR."

Only barbs can train MR with stat points. Barbs are melee fighters.
