This is why the cost would be astronomical.

Why make a command to be used, then impose such a cost so that it is rarely, if ever, used?

Player: I'd like that lance.
NPC: 3 obsidian.
Player: No, I'd like that lance to fight the darkness. You are impeding my holy quest.
NPC: Eat [REDACTED], 3 obsidian.
Player does UNSPEAKABLE THINGS to NPC!
NPC is stunned, but will recover.
Player takes object from NPC.
Player: I apologize, but you should be nicer and more generous, so that your soul can rest in a happier, greater place.

Instead of making all selfish NPCs wandering salesmen, why not implement some actual craftsmen from which spectacular items may be purchased?

The source of equipment for armies should not be coming from respawning NPCs in secret hideouts. There must be some talented craftsmen and materials suppliers who work full time to create all of this gear.

A principled character should have a relationship with such a talented artisan and should be able to acquire his products whenever necessary. Of course, so should everyone else (perhaps depending on the aura of the artisan).

If a principled character meets a wandering thug NPC wearing nice armor, instead of asking how much it would cost to buy it off the guy's back, he should be asking where he got it from. So long as this question remains unanswerable by respawning NPCs, then no 'barter' system can be at all realistic.

It's not "nicer and more generous" - if I was a lightie, as soon as a grey NPC started whipping out astronomical prices, I'd charge him for attempted highway robbery.

Penalty: death and confiscation of equipment.

Jardek, re the previous comment, I was asking for 'selfish' people to sell their gear, not give it away. I only created this thread because of discussions from the 'principled alignment' thread. I am not so bothered about whether they do or dont give the gear away, owing to the fact that all the gear I ever use is requested. I have a very limited knowledge of items in the game and have no idea what elite equipment is located on grey auras (likely because I am a Paladin and all similar titled NPCs are obviously light aura).

Good luck with that if you're Principled!
