YOU choose what name you're going to see someone as. So if you only happen to hear their name spoken in the room you could assign that name to that character so you don't need to worry about whether or not they greet you. Or a person could give you a fake name so you assign that to them without ever knowing that it's not true.

Truth be told, I did not like the idea at first simply because I do not see a need for it. It's a nice little feature, nothing more, nothing which demands immediate attention.

As the discussion progressed, however, I found myself loving what the idea turned into - a replacement of greet. This would require a complete revamp of the who-list/tell system, though :(

I cannot think of a smart way to integrate the two things, unfortunately.

I think the tell system should be left as it is. Facial recognition has nothing to do with tells since you can send tells to people you've never met, so if someone lies and gives you a fake name they go to the person he's impersonating. Offhand I can't think of anything to resolve issues with the who list though.

This idea is so beautiful it makes me orgasm. It would solve all the annoying lamer adjectives and the greet problems I posted about in one swoop.

For the 'tell' command, it would be easy- just make it so that if you 'tell' the alias you've given someone, it'll go to them.

As for the 'who' list.. that'll take some butchering. But it'll be worth it, for getting rid of the adjective / greet problems.

Also, you could have disguise aliases- for example, if I disguised myself to 'a bad-ass male sprite', and you dubbed me, under that adj, as 'Bob', then every time you saw me with that adj, you'd see Bob. This fixes everything. Do it!

It's not that simple. There are people with similar adjectives, a cabal skill, as well as disguise to take into account. It doesn't fix everything - and really, there SHOULDN'T be a fix needed - the acjective problem is people abusing a system that should be punished - not the need to create a new system that people can't abuse (which will never happen)

People with similar adjectives, or other people disguising them, shouldn't appear with the alias- that's how it's treated with the current greet system. As for a certain cabal spell, simply treat the caster as the victim, as it's traditionally done.

And in case you haven't noticed, the Imms don't seem to give puppy crap about all the pet naming and adjective swiping, etc. that happens. I haven't seen a single curse, delete, or gentle warning on the subject. You're really being incredibly defeatist- I'd love to hear exactly how the proposed system would be half as flagrantly abusable as the current. Not to mention, it would solve the simple dilemma that the current greet system, depending on how one handles it, is giving too many or too few people their name.

You're wrong. This is being enforced. First offense is a warning, second offense is a curse, and I would imagine it gets worse from there.

I'm not being incredibly defeatist, I'm being a realist. What's the first thing people do when a new system is announced? Try to break it, or circumvent it. Do I know how it will, or could be broken? No, because I'm not that devious. I've never actually attempted to do it. But I know there are quite a few players who are horrendously good at such things, and will continue to be horrendously good at such things. It's like hacking. There's no unhackable system. All I can guarantee you, is that someone will find a way to do it.

Then I'll have a jolly night on the town, shooting prayers right and left about everyone and their harem floating around with emulating pet names. That said.. I still see it -far- too often for me to be convinced that the problem is under control. This would snip it in the nuts.
