Post subject:  Unable to connect to the mud
Question for all you folks out there with vast computer knowledge:

No matter where I'm connected to the internet from (home, work, modem, etc.), I am unable to get to the SK from my work computer. I cannot connect through telnet, I cannot connect with Zmud. From my home computer, however, there is no problem.

Any ideas how a computer would be blocking mud access and how I might get around that? I think it might have something to do with disabled ports. If that were the case, does anyone know what I'd need to do to re-enable them?

I'd love to be able to Mud from the train on my way home from work ...

Most workplace routers block almost everything outside basic web access. You'd need to talk to the IT staff to get the port opened for outgoing connections.

Forgive my naivete, but isn't a router related to the local internet environment, not the computer itself? I can go home and use the same wireless internet that my home computer is on, and still can't get through to the mud, even though my home computer gets through fine.

I dont really know how to explain this simply not using computer things but here goes. There are two ways of basic protection one is catch and block things as they come in to your computer. Two stop you from going places where bad things might be.

Your work computer has had a leash around it to stop it from going to far and bring back infected files etc. This was put on it by admin at work when they gave you access to what you can and can not do on the computer. This is assuming you do not have admin access on your work computer which is most common as any computer admin will tell you "Users are the biggest problem with computers."

If you do have admin access to your computer then it is relatively simple to do depending on the reason for the problem. You can be about 99% sure that in doing so you will be lowering the security of the computer.

All you want to tell your IT help staff is that you play this really cool... ummm work training game... that... increases your typing speed... :roll:

And that you want to allow "outgoing tcp on port 1996". Nows I'mah take a guess and say that your work computer has firewall software installed on it. That would probably be norton, or mcafee, or something simular (I believe windows XP has a firewall built-in to the OS aswell? correct me if I'm wrong I don't use unstable software :P). It's best to let your IT staff do this, but worst come to worst, you can always read the manual for your firewall software, or the website (if you comfortable playing with things). That being said to change firewall settings, like silmar said, you need admin access to your work computer.

Http tunnelling should solve your problem if you can't change the settings of your pc. You will be able to use telnet (and any other services) receiving data in port 80.

Try this but you will experience lag.
