I felt this deserved a thread of its own. Definetly a better choice than plain olde telnet.

I've used putty for quite some time for work (*I'm a sysadmin of sorts*), and I love the security, and sheer compact format of this terminal. When you launch it you will get a config set up, I recommend making a saved session for each character you have, so that you can have it log to a different file for each. I have the following settings.
Session - Host: mud.shatteredkingdoms.org
Port: 1996
Protocol: Telnet
Session name: One for each character.
Logging - Log all session output
Log file name: {Character name}.txt
Always append to the end of the log file.
Terminal - Boxes checked = Auto wrap mode initially on, and Use background colour to erase screen. I always disable blinking text here.
Line discipline options: Here is where you set local echo, I use auto.
Keyboard - Make sure the Backspace key is Control-H I keep everything else default.
Bell - I hate sounds on my terminals.
Features - I use default
Window - Rows and Columns, mine are 24/80
Lines of scrollback: 10000, but some may view this as excessive.
Boxes checked: Display scrollback, Reset scrollback on display activity (*sometimes I turn this off*). Uncheck push erased text into scrollback, trust me, it is annoying.
Selection - I like Compromise [middle extends, Right pastes] for quick cutting & pasting. the rest I the page I keep default.
Rest of Configuration I use defaults.
Go back to Session and save the definition before hitting Open!

As was mentioned before, a very powerful terminal program that can fit on a floppy. Granted it doesn't have triggers or scripting enabled or any other fancy stuff, but it is definetly an awesome term.
