SK Character: RAWR!
After careful consideration, I've come to the conclusion that Ardith is right.

What we should do is make his character the Queen of Training. We'll do away with NPC trainers entirely, and just give him a full mastered skillset, songset and spellset. In order to advance, you will have to hail the Queen. Level advancements will also go exclusively through Ardith.

And not loving his character for it will be punishable by full-level loss.

It is an arduous task, but one that would be worthwhile to have NPCs who train different skills and spells have a short universal script to go off of and state what a keyword, such as spear, is and what it would be good for. The trainers are supposed to be teachers, after all, instructing not only in how to use it, but how they are to be used and what is supposed to be good in varying situations. Or, in a more simple move, just make a help file to describe it.

As for adding it in the list description at a shop, this really should be there. An epee is completely different from a katana which is again different from a bastard sword. While there are some long descriptions that do describe the items fairly accurately, others are made to be left to wonder. Hopefully the appraise/identify option will be implemented, if this option does not make it into the game.

I think you should get a full-level loss for agreeing with me too, so that nobody can win. Besides, that shop you provided as an example is probably one of the poorest examples since the subtype of every weapon is listed in it with the exception of one it looks like.

All this thread really boils down to is that you want things handed to you without doing the necessary work. Seriously, if you're so concerned about helping the newbies, why don't you do this work yourself, and give it to the immstaff instead of suggesting that "veteran" players do this helpful work. Of course what you mean by veteran players is those that are knowledgeable with the weapon subtype system.

Personally I feel there's a difference between being helpful and coddling, and this falls under coddling.

I think I will stick with the RP reason why it should be given and not the, "Hey, unless you check out this site for all OOC knowledge or ask your OOC knowledge guru in the game, don't even try playing."

I suppose it is just impossible to ask another character in game.

And where is this mythological lore in game? It is at best deduction from experimentation, at worse OOC knowledge with is more than likely.

Yeah, bogus statement. Asking another character in-game doesn't solve anything when said character uses OOC knowledge to answer the question.

Or said character could just buy whatever weapon it is with the crapton of extra money they have lying around, say "Yeah, it's a battle-spear" and then hand it over, maybe after enchanting it a bit given their class/tribunal.

It's nice to hear that the game mechanics facilitate such fun and meaningful interactions with other players. It's like if we had to ask someone else how to fill out a 1040. Wow, what an engrossing environment that would be! Maybe we could get told our tax bracket by asking a friend, and they could itemize our deductions for us while they were at it!

Honestly. You'd think there would be more interesting things to spend time on. Just because some other player wasted his time figuring out what is where does not mean it is worthwhile to perpetuate the whole thing. There's a difference between an interesting, numberless system and something that's just censored and missing information. There's a difference between exploration and pixel ditching.

I see no valid reason why the examine and list commands should not include subtype for weapons. Any argument against has been predicated on the hubris and compulsion of 'veterans' or solipsists.

The current setup relies on builders to make up for the lack of features the code has few reasons not to have beyond a lack of code development. End of story. Welcome to Shattered Kingdoms. Even with that being true, it can still be fun.

Especially since it's completely free and programmed in someone's spare time. It's not a crippling bug by any means.
