And don't forget to ask about/do lowbie quests. Many of them turn out some decent start-up coin. Check your academy first, then your hometown and immediate environs.

As to buying equipment, many older priests/sorcerers have cast "identify" so many times in the course of enchanting equipment, they probably can tell you right away what material is level-appropriate for you. Ask around before you buy. Two major factors in what determines quality of a piece of gear is what it is made of, and how (much) it is enchanted. For instance, someone mentioned tanso steel...I think the last time one of my characters wore that, I stopped getting it stolen at Veteran or Expert (though I bought it Jman, so I re-bought most of the set by the time I got to Expert lol) Conversely, I've had an academy-store-bought weapon stolen at Initiatiate due to over-enchanting.

That, is assuming that said priests/sorcerers actually bother to memorize all the stuff they enchant, for all the people they enchant for, which - sorry to disillusion you - is not always the case. Most times I'm so swamped with Toji I just don't pay any attention at all at what I'm enchanting for others. I just know how to read item qualities and make an assumption on whether it will get stolen or not.

Yes, yes a thousand times yes. I love this game and keep coming back, but this is one of two things that keep turning me away. I kept experimenting and asking for advice and had no idea what level I could upgrade on. I think I had a Journeyman character in full tanslo once that kept getting stole from and I was all WTFBBQ!
