Finally made it to Mentor after about 75 hours... I'm guessing that a few forum people already know who I am by now. One thing I'd like to mention is that my in-game experiences have been VERY pleasant, much more so than I would have expected from reading forum archives. It's mostly the same on the CF forums... if one was to judge the community from the forum presence, it wouldn't bode well for the MUD. OTOH, everyone who has PM'ed me has been very helpful. Thanks! :drunk:

Can anyone give any tips on how the Mentor system works? You get a tell (I've received one) when a new character enters the game, and then you can offer to show them the ropes? I don't know as much as the veterans but I could probably help a genuine newbie.

As an aside... the one tell I got was for a newbie that showed up in the who list like:

Bob.

Why do so many people do this -- use a period to end their title?

Bob.
Frank.
Joe.
Susie.

I'm guessing it must be some convention that would denote... unwillingness to say more about the character? Probably not a true newbie then.

EDIT: Also, is it against the rules to go to newbie areas and fight NPCs for coins? I still haven't found any reliable ways to make money and I am in desperate need of it.

"Bob." Denotes that the player is not "New to Pyrathia." It's the stock non-newbie title, so to speak.

Just my guess: It's not against the rules to collect coin there because they all have healthy repop rates; however, it probably isn't worth your while. There are lots of great places for quick coin.

As I see, every single new user (be they "New to Pyrathia" by selecting Yes when asked at character creation) is automatically titled as if "title ."

The NPCs I have recently been leveling on take a good while to kill and drop 3-4 silver. So far I've yet to find any better ways to gather coin other than the starting NPCs.

If they have the "New to Pyrathia" title, they very well may be new to the game. It is a title added if you select Yes when asked if you are new in character creation. I've created characters without that title and been asked fairly quickly by a mentor who has received the tell if I could use any assistance and been given IC greetings. It is up to you what you want to do with your mentor status. I believe you can even use the 'mentor' command to disable hearing those messages.

Also of note, you will only hear mentor messages for the kingdom you are based in. I may be incorrect, but as I understand when the mentor command is used by a low level character, the request is sent to those of the same class and kingdom first. I could use someone to verify that last part though.

EDIT: Additionally, the more you mentor, you get bonuses in the form of attribute points. The game strongly encourages player interaction in mentoring. Just keep it IC and go all out, and reap the rewards!

Plenty of places have NPCs that drop almost a platinum apiece.
